THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCK KNOCKS (SHKK) 5-evening stand-up comedy course runs from Monday to Friday, 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, from June 4 to 8, 2018. You’ll get the SHKK comedy manual, video of your graduating performance, and lots of coaching from a comedy legend,  Glynn Nicholas, as well as Adelaide’s own Ross Voss, and alumna Kim Da Cruz.


Student and Concession – $300 + GST

Early Bird – $350 + GST (before May 27 only)

Bring-a-Mate-Rate – $500 + GST (2 people)

Full Fee – $600 + GST

Day 1:  Monday – The Basics & Joke Structure

Introduction to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before launching into the deep end with your very own mini set, and then developing new material.


Day 2:  Tuesday – Preparation & Generating Content

Learn to understand your audience, recognise taboo topics and create your own original funny material. Also learn about the  Open Mic circuit, particularly rooms, people to know, and the politics, with Adelaide’s own Ross Voss.


Day 3: Wednesday – Building Confidence & Delivery

Gain confidence and start to modify your delivery to build tension, energy, and polish your story telling technique.


Day 4: Thursday – Controlling a Room & The Close

Practice delivering your set as well as building skills to deal with the dreaded (or welcomed) heckler, before polishing a strong close to your set ready for tomorrow’s graduation ceremony.

Day 5: Friday – Graduation Night and Performance 
(with Glynn Nicholas, Ross Voss, and Kim Da Cruz)

The moment you have been working toward! Perform your stand-up comedy routine in front of family and friends, conquer your fears and perform alongside Glynn Nicholas, Ross Voss, and alumna, Kim Da Cruz, to a paying audience. Receive your own personal HD video of your performance too!

Meet Your Teachers

Glynn Nicholas – Resident Teacher

Glynn Nicholas is a comedy genius, in performing, writing, and producing. Made famous by his regular appearances on the ABC’s ‘The Big Gig’, and shortly after in his own time slot with ‘The Glynn Nicholas Show’, this is a man who can see the funny in even the most poignant and stressful situations. That’s why he believes the role of comedy is one of the most important jobs in the world.

Dave Ivkovic – Guest Comedian

Dave Ivkovic started on the stand up circuit as a dare in 1997 and has never looked back. With a quick wit and childlike charm Dave is bound to tickle the funny bone of any audience. He regularly performs as MC and support act at all the major comedy clubs in Victoria, including The Comic’s Lounge and The Comedy Club, as well as comedy clubs and private functions all around Australia. Dave has also heard nationwide on radio via Austereos Homegrown and has appeared in many films, TV shows and theatre productions. In his time on the Melbourne comedy scene Dave has had the privilege of working with and befriending some of Australia’s best comedians including Dave Hughes, Dave Grant, Pete Hellier, Pommy Johnson, Colin Cole and others, and he has recently completed 11 shows MCing “The Best Of” at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Kim Da Cruz – Alumna

Kim Da Cruz is a School of Hard Knocks alumna, and has performed at open mics across Melbourne. She has also set up her own room – The Cruz Comedy Club in Carrum, a South East Suburb of Melbourne.  This year she also performed as part of ‘The Best of’ the School of Hard Knock Knocks, at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Kim will be sharing her insights into the open mic community, politics and how to get started from a standing start in comedy.
