THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCK KNOCKS (SHKK) 5-evenings stand-up comedy course runs from Sunday to Thursday, 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, from March 3 to 7, 2018. You’ll get the SHKK comedy manual, video of your graduating performance, and lots of coaching from the resident comedian, Glynn Nicholas, our guest comedian, Julia Clarke, as well as input from our SHKK alumnus, Zack Southern.


Student and Concession – $400 + GST

Early Bird – $450 + GST (before February 22 only)

Bring-a-Mate-Rate – $600 + GST (2 people)

Full Fee – $700 + GST

Day 1:  Sunday – The Basics & Finding yourself (with Glynn Nicholas)

Introduction to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before launching into the deep end with your very own mini set.


Day 2:  Monday – Your Audience and Taboos (with Julia Clarke)

Learn to gauge your audience and how to recognise and manage taboo topics while learning confidence building/ fear smashing techniques. You’ll also get input on your set from our guest comedian, Julia Clarke.


Day 3: Tuesday – The Opener (with Zack Southern)

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about the open mic circuit, the Adelaide Fringe Festival, and life after graduation.


Day 4: Wednesday – The Heckler and The Closer (with Glynn Nicholas)

Practice delivering your set as well as building skills to deal with the dreaded (or welcomed) heckler before polishing a strong close to your set ready for tomorrow’s graduation ceremony.


Receive your own full colour #SHKK manual, filled with advice, jokes and links to videos, as well as a video of your final performance.


Day 5: Thursday – Graduation Night and Performance 
(with Glynn Nicholas, Julia Clarke, and Zack Sourthern)

The moment you have been working toward! Perform your stand-up comedy routine in front of family and friends, conquer your fears and perform alongside Glynn Nicholas, our guest comedian, and returning alumnus.

Meet Your Teachers

Glynn Nicholas – Resident Comedy Coach

Glynn Nicholas is a comedy genius, in performing, writing, and producing. Made famous by his regular appearances on the ABC’s ‘The Big Gig’, and shortly after in his own time slot with ‘The Glynn Nicholas Show’, this is a man who can see the funny in even the most poignant and stressful situations. That’s why he believes the role of comedy is one of the most important jobs in the world. Most recently, Glynn was the main star of ‘Is This Thing On?‘, a documentary/reality TV show about 10 budding stand-up comedians.

Julia Clarke – Guest Comedian

Julia Clarke ComedianJulia Clarke is our guest comedian for the March stand-up comedy course in Adelaide, and “boy!” does she have some impressive comedy credentials. A Raw Comedy State Finalist, two time Adelaide Comedy Next Generation comedian, who has performed her own show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Julia has a wealth of knowledge to share with our comedy newbies.

Zack Southern – Returning Alumnus

Zack Southern ComedianSince graduating from the School of Hard Knock Knocks in September 2018, Zack has been a prolific open mic performer across Adelaide. Zack is our returning alumnus, who will share his personal journey after graduating, discuss the open mic scene in Adelaide, and also share his experience dealing with the politics of the comedy business.
