Day 1:  Sunday – The Basics, Finding Yourself, Joke Structure and Preparation

Get introduced to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before jumping into the deep end with your very own mini comedy set. Then, it’s time to learn the ‘Normal-Normal-Twist’ technique, and developing your own original jokes, before trialling them on stage and giving them a polish.

Day 2:  Monday – Generating Content and Building Confidence

Learn to gauge your audience and how to recognise and manage taboo topics while learning confidence building/fear smashing techniques. You’ll also get input on your set from our guest comedian, Jason Chong, meet the other SHKK alumni and develop more of your original material.

Day 3: Tuesday – Delivery and Controlling a Room

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about the open mic circuit, the Australian comedy festivals, such as Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, as well as life after graduation, with a visit from our returning alumna, Lisa Roszko.

Day 4: Wednesday – The Close and Graduation Preparation

Closing your set strong is this night’s goal, as well as putting the extra polish on tomorrow night’s graduation performance. This is where the chaos of writing is converted into a succinct 5-minute set.

Receive your own full colour physical manual AND online course access, filled with advice, jokes and links to videos, as well as a video of your final performance.

Day 5: Thursday – Graduation Night and Performance

The moment you have been working toward! Perform your stand-up comedy routine in front of family and friends, conquer your fears and perform alongside three professional stand-up comedians. Watch previous graduation videos by clicking here.

A well structured and designed course. The perfect combination of individual attention and dynamic group... development. They say it takes a village to raise a child. But I learnt it takes a village of children to raise a good joke. The School of Hard Knock Knocks is that very village.read more

Meet Your Comedy Coaches

Glynn Nicholas – Resident Comedy Coach

Glynn Nicholas Comedian

The resident comedy coach is responsible for moving our nervous nobodies into confident comedians, throughout the five night course. All coaches are veteran comedians, with years of experience.

Glynn Nicholas is a comedy genius, in performing, writing, and producing. Made famous by his regular appearances on the ABC’s ‘The Big Gig’, and shortly after in his own time slot with ‘The Glynn Nicholas Show’, this is a man who can see the funny in even the most poignant and stressful situations. That’s why he believes the role of comedy is one of the most important jobs in the world.

LISTEN to Glynn’s interview on the School of Hard Knock Knocks podcast episode.

Jason Chong – Guest Comedian

Jason Chong Comedian

At each School of Hard Knock Knocks stand-up comedy course we invite a veteran comedian to share their wisdom and perform alongside the students at the graduation performance. This month we’ve invited Jason Chong, a comedian who’s performed at Edinburgh Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and was named Adelaide Comic of the Year in 2010. He’s also appeared on the Footy Show, Today, The Comedy Channel, and The Project. In short, Jason is very experienced!

Lisa Roszko – Returning Alumnus

Lisa Roszko Comedian

At each course we invite a previous graduate (alumni) to perform at the School of Hard Knock Knocks graduation. We also invite our returning alumnus to provide insights into the open mic comedy circuit, as well as their experiences performing at Australian comedy festivals around Australia. This month that alumnus is Lisa Roszko, and actor and stand-up comedian. Lisa performs regularly at open mics around Adelaide, and has even started her own skit show – The Two Twits.
