Day 1:  Sunday – The Basics, Finding Yourself, Joke Structure and Preparation

Get introduced to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before jumping into the deep end with your very own mini comedy set. Then, it’s time to learn the ‘Normal-Normal-Twist’ technique, and developing your own original jokes, before trialling them on stage and giving them a polish.

Day 2:  Monday – Generating Content and Building Confidence

Learn to gauge your audience and how to recognise and manage taboo topics while learning confidence building/fear smashing techniques. You’ll also get input on your set from our guest comedian, Gerry Masi, meet the other SHKK alumni and develop more of your original material.

Day 3: Tuesday – Delivery and Controlling a Room

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about the open mic circuit, the Australian comedy festivals, such as Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, as well as life after graduation, with a visit from our returning alumnus.

Day 4: Wednesday – The Close and Graduation Preparation

Closing your set strong is this night’s goal, as well as putting the extra polish on tomorrow night’s graduation performance. This is where the chaos of writing is converted into a succinct 5-minute set.

Took the class, Nov. 20 to 24. 2019, and was a great experience. Our class was performing and... getting feedback day one! The heavy focus is on performance, rehearsal, and feedback is a much better than courses where the focus heavy on writing. Whether you’re a seasoned standup or a newcomer the course has something for anyone. Cheers!read more

The School of Hard Knock Knocks has a great "Learn stand up comedy" course. I particularly like the... fact that at the end of the course you are performing. Graduating is not a good bye, but more of a welcome to the community where there are event and gig opportunities. If you're hesitating about doing comedy, just bite the bullet and take the course. It is really rewarding.read more

I attended the school of hard knock knocks in June 2019 and had the time of my life. My coaches,... the phenomenal Brad Oakes and returning alumni, Peter Murphy were not only supportive, but had a wealth of knowledge and experience they were more than happy to discuss with the group. Plus I got to perform with George kapiniaris on graduation night. The facilitator, Nathan Brown was helpful and, since graduation, has been very approachable with tips and suggestions on how to find success in the comedy circuit. If you are thinking about doing stand up and not sure how to begin, definitely give these guys a call.read more

Meet Your Comedy Coaches

Resident Comedy Coach

Brad Oakes Comedian

The resident comedy coach is responsible for moving our nervous nobodies into confident comedians, throughout the five night course. This month the resident comedy coach is veteran comedian Brad Oakes. Brad is considered by many to be comedy royalty, and has over 29 years of stand-up comedy experience. He has performed on Australian classic comedy shows, which include The Comedy Company, Jimeoin, Full Frontal, and Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and is guaranteed to make any event, whether formal or informal, a hilarious night out.

Listen to Brad’s interview here.

Gerry Masi – Celebrity Guest Comedian

Gerry Masi Comedian

Gerry Masi is an amazing character comedian, playing the debaucherous Mad Dog Malcolm Cummins. Combining his powerful singing vocals, honed via years on the jazz scene, Gerry takes his audience on a wild, anything goes ride that is a shock to the senses. And yet, at times, he engages the audience intimately, building a level of rapport only possible by a veteran entertainer.

Listen to Gerry’s interview here.

Bharath Rao – Returning Alumnus

Bharath Rao Comedian

At each course we invite a previous graduate (alumni) to perform at the School of Hard Knock Knocks graduation. This month it’s the loveable Bharath Rao, who’ll be providing insights into the open mic comedy circuit, how to network within the comedy industry, and his comedy advice post-graduation.
