THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCK KNOCKS (SHKK) 5-evenings stand-up comedy course runs from Sunday to Thursday, 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, from November 24 to 28, 2019. You’ll get the SHKK comedy manual, video of your graduating performance, and lots of coaching from the legendary resident comedian, Brad Oakes, Raw Comedy finalist Gavin Sempel, as well as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) Gala performer, the incredible Jeff Green. This is truly a once in a life time opportunity!

Day 1:  Sunday – The Basics & Finding yourself (with Brad Oakes)

Introduction to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before launching into the deep end with your very own mini set. Then, it’s time to learn the ‘Normal-Normal-Twist’ technique and get your creative juices flowing!


Day 2:  Monday – Your Audience and Taboos (with Jeff Green)

Learn to gauge your audience and how to recognise and manage taboo topics while learning confidence building/ fear smashing techniques. You’ll also get input on your set from our guest comedian, the legendary British comedian, Jeff Green.


Day 3: Tuesday – The Opener (with Gavin Sempel)

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about the open mic circuit in Melbourne, Raw Comedy, and performing on Australia’s Got Talent, with Gavin Sempel.


Day 4: Wednesday – The Heckler and The Closer (with Brad Oakes)

Practice delivering your set as well as building skills to deal with the dreaded (or welcomed) heckler before polishing a strong close to your set ready for tomorrow’s graduation ceremony.


Receive your own full colour physical manual AND online course access, filled with advice, jokes and links to videos, as well as a video of your final performance.


Day 5: Thursday – Graduation Night and Performance 
(with Brad Oakes, Jeff Green and Gavin Sempel)

The moment you have been working toward! Perform your stand-up comedy routine in front of family and friends, conquer your fears and perform alongside three professional stand-up comedians.

Brad Oakes – Resident Teacher

Brad Oakes Comedian

Brad Oakes is an actor, writer and stand-up comedian, who has worked on Australia’s most iconic comedy TV shows, including Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Comedy Company, Jimeoin, and Full Frontal. He has been performing stand-up comedy since 1989, and has performed on Rove Live, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and in his own shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He has also directed other great comedians, including Corinne Grant, Lehmo, Geraldine Hickey and Harley Breen. Most recently, Brad was the guest comedian on the comedy documentary ‘Is This thing On?‘, to be aired in 2019.

Jeff Green – Guest Comedian

Jeff Green Comedian

20 year veteran of comedy, Jeff Green is a UK TV celebrity, successful author and award winning comedian. His recent UK appearances include Celebrity Masterchef (twice) and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. He’s regarded by the Guardian as “one of the best comedians in the land” and is one of the most popular comedians at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Gavin Sempel – Returning Alumnus

Gavin Sempel Comedian

Gavin Sempel graduated from the School of Hard Knock Knocks in 2016. At only 18 years of age, he was one of the youngest students to attend our course. However, what Gavin lacked in life experience, he made up for in determination. Two years later, Gavin had performed over 300 open mic events across Australia, as well as winning the Victorian Raw Comedy Final, and coming runner’s up at the Grand Final at the Melbourne Town Hall.
