Day 1:  Sunday – The Basics, Finding Yourself, Joke Structure and Preparation

Get introduced to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before jumping into the deep end with your very own mini comedy set. Then, it’s time to learn the ‘Normal-Normal-Twist’ technique, and developing your own original jokes, before trialling them on stage and giving them a polish.

Day 2:  Monday – Generating Content and Building Confidence

Learn to gauge your audience and how to recognise and manage taboo topics while learning confidence building/fear smashing techniques. You’ll also get input on your set from our guest comedian, meet the other SHKK alumni and develop more of your original material.

Day 3: Tuesday – Delivery and Controlling a Room

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about the open mic circuit, the Australian comedy festivals, such as Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, as well as life after graduation, with a visit from our returning alumnus.

Day 4: Wednesday – The Close and Graduation Preparation

Closing your set strong is this night’s goal, as well as putting the extra polish on tomorrow night’s graduation performance. This is where the chaos of writing is converted into a succinct 5-minute set.

Meet Your Comedy Coaches

Ben Horowitz – Resident Teacher

Ben_Horowitz_headshotBen Horowitz has played every possible room imaginable, and some that are not. Over the past 15 years, Ben has performed to audiences as large as 3000, and as small as three. He’s performed at comedy clubs, RSL clubs, and music festivals, alongside comic greats, like Greg Fleet, Chris Franklin, Brad Oakes, and the Nelson Twins. He’s headlined and MCed, killing it on stage and also bombing. And that’s what makes Ben an ideal comedy teacher – he’s experienced the best and worst the comedy circuit has to offer.

Fady Kassab – Guest Comedian

Fady Kassab comedianLebanese-Australian Fady Ghassan Kassab won the 2019 Raw Comedy National Championship in Melbourne, beating 1000 other standup comedians taking part in the event. In this School of Hard Knock Knocks course, Fady will be sharing his comedy journey, giving advice, and also performing alongside the students at the graduation.

Returning Alumnus – Ganesh V

At each course we invite a previous graduate (alumni) to perform at the School of Hard Knock Knocks graduation. We also invite our returning alumnus to provide insights into the open mic comedy circuit, as well as their experiences performing at Australian comedy festivals around Australia. This month it’s Ganesh V.
