LEARN STAND-UP COMEDY over 5-evenings from Sunday to Thursday, 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, from June 23 to 27, 2019. You’ll get the SHKK comedy manual, our complementary online course, video of your graduating performance, and lots of coaching from the comedy legends Brad Oakes and George Kapiniaris, as well as inside knowledge from SHKK alumnus and comedy room runner, Peter Murphy.

Day 1:  Sunday – The Basics & Finding yourself (with Brad Oakes)

Introduction to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before launching into the deep end with your very own mini set.


Day 2:  Monday – Your Audience and Taboos (with guest comedian George Kapiniaris)

Learn to gauge your audience and how to recognise and manage taboo topics while learning confidence building/ fear smashing techniques. You’ll also get input on your set from the George Kapiniaris.


Day 3: Tuesday – The Opener (with Peter Murphy)

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about breaking into the paid comedy scene, and comedy festivals with School of Hard Knock Knocks alumnus, Peter Murphy.


Day 4: Wednesday – The Heckler and The Closer (with Brad Oakes)

Practice delivering your set as well as building skills to deal with the dreaded (or welcomed) heckler before polishing a strong close to your set ready for tomorrow’s graduation ceremony.


Receive your own full colour #SHKK manual, filled with advice, jokes and links to videos, as well as a video of your final performance.


Day 5: Thursday – Graduation Night and Performance 
(with George Kapiniaris, Brad Oakes, and Peter Murphy)

The moment you have been working toward! Perform your stand-up comedy routine in front of family and friends, conquer your fears and perform alongside George Kapiniaris, Brad Oakes, and Peter Murphy, to a paying audience.

Brad Oakes – Resident Comedy Coach

Brad Oakes Comedian

Brad Oakes is an actor, writer and stand-up comedian, who has worked on Australia’s most iconic comedy TV shows, including Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Comedy Company, Jimeoin, and Full Frontal. He has been performing stand-up comedy since 1989, and has performed on Rove Live, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and in his own shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He has also directed other great comedians, including Corinne Grant, Lehmo, Geraldine Hickey and Harley Breen. Most recently, Brad was the guest comedian on the comedy documentary ‘Is This thing On?‘, to be aired in 2019.

George Kapiniaris – Guest Celebrity Comedian

George Kapiniaris Comedian

Movies, theatre, TV soap operas & drama, and of course, stand-up comedy. George Kapiniaris has done it all. And he’s been influencing Australian culture in the process. Best known for writing and acting roles in ‘Wogs out of Work’, which debuted in 1987 at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, this stage show launched his TV comedy career in a show by the same name. George’s next TV success was writing and performing in another comedy TV show, Acropolis Now. This show won his fellow performer, Mary Coustas, the 1993 Logie for Most Popular Comedy Performer for her role as Effie.

Peter Murphy – Returning Alumnus

Peter Murphy ComedianEvery month the School of Hard Knock Knocks invites an alumni to return and perform as the ‘middle bracket’, as well as share their experiences on the comedy circuit. The June returning alumnus is Peter Murphy. Before completing the School of Hard Knock Knocks stand-up comedy course, Peter had competed at Raw Comedy and was a regular on the open mic circuit. Peter will share his trials, tribulations and politics of the comedy industry, and help newbies find their feet.
