LEARN STAND-UP COMEDY over 5-evenings from Sunday to Thursday, 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, from October 20 to 24, 2019. You’ll get the SHKK comedy manual, our complementary online course, video of your graduating performance, and lots of coaching from our resident comedy coach, Brad Oakes, guest comedian, Michael Connell, and returning alumnus, Warrick Sutton.

Day 1:  Sunday – The Basics & Finding yourself (with Brad Oakes)

Introduction to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before launching into the deep end with your very own mini set.


Day 2:  Monday – Your Audience and Taboos (with Michael Connell)

Learn to gauge your audience and how to recognise and manage taboo topics while learning confidence building/ fear smashing techniques. You’ll also get input on your set from the Michael Connell.


Day 3: Tuesday – The Opener (with returning alumni)

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about breaking into the paid comedy scene, and comedy festivals with School of Hard Knock Knocks alumnus, Warrick Sutton.


Day 4: Wednesday – The Heckler and The Closer (with resident comedy coach)

Practice delivering your set as well as building skills to deal with the dreaded (or welcomed) heckler before polishing a strong close to your set ready for tomorrow’s graduation ceremony.


Receive your own full colour #SHKK manual, filled with advice, jokes and links to videos, as well as a video of your final performance.


Day 5: Thursday – Graduation Night and Performance 
(with Michael Connell, Brad Oakes, and Warrick Sutton)

The moment you have been working toward! Perform your stand-up comedy routine in front of family and friends, conquer your fears and perform alongside three professional comedians, to a paying audience.

Brad Oakes – Resident Comedy Coach

Brad Oakes Comedian

Brad Oakes is an actor, writer and stand-up comedian, who has worked on Australia’s most iconic comedy TV shows, including Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Comedy Company, Jimeoin, and Full Frontal. He has been performing stand-up comedy since 1989, and has performed on Rove Live, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and in his own shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He has also directed other great comedians, including Corinne Grant, Lehmo, Geraldine Hickey and Harley Breen. Most recently, Brad was the guest comedian on the comedy documentary ‘Is This thing On?‘, to be aired in 2019.

Michael has worked in just about every corner of the Australian comedy industry. Telling jokes on Australia’s Got Talent, Rove [live] and other TV programs, being “Weird Al” Yankovic’s warm up act, hosting breakfast radio, performing sell out shows in the Melbourne Comedy Festival, giving motivational talks at schools and universities and appearing at all the best comedy clubs in the country are just a few of Michael’s achievements as a comedian.
